With a major earthquake shaking up Sikkim severely, the Centre on Sunday rushed Indian Air Force aircraft carrying National Disaster Response Force personnel with necessary equipment and material for relief and rescue operations.
The decision to rush four aircraft was taken in a meeting of the>National Disaster Management Authority, chaired by the cabinet secretary.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier spoke to Sikkim CM Pawan Kumar Chamling and offered help in all possible ways, including availability of forces.
Officials in the home ministry said NDRF personnel would reach Bagdogra using IAF aircraft. They would subsequently travel to Gangtok by road. TheBSFand”>West Bengal governmentwere making necessary arrangement for these personnel to reach Sikkim’s capital by road as quickly as possible, they added.
